1963 Gibson J45 Guitar
(Serial No. 142771) Excellent minus condition showing some typical playing wear. I think the slope shoulder Gibsons are about the best around for backing up fiddle tunes. I guess others think so too, as they are hard to find and hard to keep in stock. Desirable slope shouldered body style, spruce top with a classic muted cherry sunburst top finish that has faded out like a Les Paul burst, natural finish mahogany back and sides, exact repro Kluson single line tuners, a thin tortoise guard, and probably a replacement Brazilian rosewood bridge. Most Gibson acoustics in 1963 came with a plastic bridge and adjustable saddle - not one of Gibsons better ideas - and the plastic bridge would soon warp or crack from the string tension. An exact replacement Brazilian rosewood bridge with a fixed saddle is considered to be an upgrade to the original, and certainly improves it tonally. No repairs noted and none are needed. Classic wide/flat neck with a Brazilian rosewood fretboard and standard 1-11/16 inch nut, frets are fine with a few minor fingerboard divots in the first three frets, neck is straight and has the steeper pre-65 headstock pitch and the tall thin braces like the Hummingbird, which seems to give better tone. There is a repaired back crack that is cleated and should not pose a problem in the future. Plays nicely as it was just set up by my luthier. It sounds more like a 50s guitar than a 60s. Comes with a newer hardshell case.
