1922 Gibson A Mandolin
(Serial number 69091 FON 11627) If you are looking for a good session mandolin this is your mandolin. Here is a 1922 Gibson A style mandolin. Just an "A", so its top bound only and does not have the pearl logo. Its a very clean appearing mandolin with a good round woody oval hole sound. It does have the Gibson label inside and, importantly, it has the adjustable truss rod. This lets you set the mandolin up for your local climate and allows you change it easily if needed. Keeps the neck straighter, too. 1922 is the beginning of the Loar improvements to the mandolin such as the adjustable truss rod and adjustable bridge. You have the slightly wider paddle peghead neck and the truss rod. Plays smoothly with excellent volume and tone. My luthier just dressed the frets and set it up - its ready to play. No breaks, cracks or repairs. The mandolin is very clean - too clean, I think. The back of the neck has been refinished, and it looks like the rest of the mandolin was at least oversprayed, as I do not see the small finish crazing I expect to see. However, whoever did this work knew what they were doing. Its a professional job. Black top finish and brown back and sides. The hardware is original, but it is missing the pickguard. The nickle silver truss rod cover was only used for about one year. Comes with a newer hardshell case.
