1923 Gibson A2Z Snakehead Mandolin
(Serial No. 75658 FON 11902) Snakehead! Very good condition. The A2Z variation is the most sought after of the Gibson A style round hole instruments, and for good reason. They sound great! The label on this one is marked A2z, and the factory order number (FON 11902) is listed in the Spann book as a 1923 A2Z. It also has all of the identifing characteristics of the A2Z - it has the inlaid pearl logo, bound top, back and fingerboard, the adjustable bridge, the thick white soundhole rosette like the A3, and the thin black line of inner binding on the top. This is a classic Loar era instrument with the sound that you expect from this period. Plays smoothly with excellent volume and tone. This is just a great sounding mandolin - an excellent demonstration of why many pickers believe the snakehead era mandolins are the best ever made by Gibson. This is a players mandolin. It was not a case queen. It has been making beautiful music for a long time. Excellent structual condition showing some playing wear and a possible repair near the endpin. No breaks, cracks or refinish. Natural top finish and brown back and sides. Has the adjustable truss rod. All hardware and finish is original, but it is missing the pickguard. Comes with the original hardshell case.
