1988 Gibson F5L Mandolin
(Serial No. 8092038) I'm a big fan of Bozeman built instruments. Pre-Gibson Flatiron mandolins are some of the best post-war F5s. Gibson bought Flatiron (as Flatiron was taking the mandolin market away from Gibson) in late 1987 and moved all mandolin production to Bozeman. 1988 is the year after Flatiron was bought. They now had access to the capital of a big corporation so they could buy better wood and tools. If you are looking for beautiful condition like new 1988 Gibson F5L it is unlikely you will find one cleaner. You might find a mark or two, as the mandolin has been used in a bluegrass band, but there are no cracks, breaks or bad dings. near mint condition, traditional brown sunburst lacquer finish. This is the classic Gibson scroll mandolin - long neck, f-holes, elevated fingerboard, beautifully flamed maple 2 piece back back and sides, solid Sitka spruce top, fully bound body, fretboard and peghead, and the classic Fern peghead inlay. It has the original gold plated Schaller tuners with pearl buttons. In 1988 this model was the top of the line for Gibson. This was made in the Bozeman, Montana plant, and was signed by the noted luthier Steve Carlson on March 7, 1988. The mandolin has just been set up by my luthier Marty Beeson. Action is great - easy and low. Comes in the original hardshell case.
