1923 Gibson A2 Snakehead Mandolin

(Serial No. 74795) Snakehead! If you are looking for a top notch sounding roundhole Gibson, and do not mind some honest playing wear, this is your mandolin. The A2Z variation is the most sought after of the Gibson A style round hole instruments, and for good reason. They sound great! The label on this one is marked "A2", but it has all of the characteristics of the A2Z - it has the inlaid pearl logo, bound top, back and fingerboard, the thick white soundhole rosettes like the A3, and the thin black line of inner binding on the top. It has the original arrowhead plate tuners that were only used on late 1922 and 1923 instruments. This is a classic Loar era instrument with the sound that you expect from this period. Plays smoothly with excellent volume and tone. This is just a great sounding mandolin - an excellent demonstration of why many pickers believe the snakehead era mandolins are the best ever made by Gibson. Excellent structual condition showing some significant playing wear - because it sounds great! Its been played well for that reason. No breaks, cracks or refinish. Black top finish and brown back and sides. Has the adjustable truss rod. All hardware and finish is original. Comes with a newer hardshell case.
