1980 Red Diamond A5 Mandolin
(Serial No. 302) Excellent condition showing some very minor playing wear. Just received from the original owner, this is a early instrument from noted luthier Don Macrostie. It shows that Don had the sound dialed from his earliest instruments. This has a solid spruce top (likely Sitka) and an one-piece back and sides of spectacular flamed maple. The peghead overlay is rosewood with an abalone diamond as the logo, and Red Diamond is engraved on the hinged tailpiece cover. Ebony fretboard and bridge. The neck has a 1-1/8 inch nut, frets are good, neck is straight, and the neck has a gentle C-shaped neck profile. Tuners have been upgraded to modern Gotahs in gold. Action is excellent while still giving a powerful sound. Here is a link to a video of the mandolin as played by by Will Gay of Tifton, GA.and another link to a video of this mandolin as played by James Hurlburt of Plant City, FL. Excellent tone and chop. Comes with the original rectangular hard case.
