1987 Cliff Sargent F5 Mandolin
(Serial No. March 1987) Excellent condition. Cliff Sargent was a very well known maker of mandolins. Rhonda Vincent played one for years. The mandolin features beautifully flamed maple back and sides, a red spruce top, and ebony fretboard and bridge. This mandolin is the same one discussed in the 2009 Mandolin Cafe posts. It was reworked by the renowned luthier Gail Hester. Gail refinished the mandolin, with hand applied French polish varnish, radiused and scooped the fretboard, and refretted the mandolin. The previous owner changed the peghead inlay from a flowerpot to a Fern inlay (why?). All hardware is gold. An engraved James tailpiece and Schaller tuners with pearl buttons were also added. There are no repairs noted. Folks, this mandolin has an AMAZING sound. Ithas strong woody chop and clear trebles, and after picking it for 15 or 20 minutes its like someone flipped the "on" switch. It gets *really* loud with a beautiful tone. Luthier Richie Dotson just went through and set up the mandolin and fitted it with a new Dotson bridge. Here is a short video clip of this instrument played by Richie. Comes with a nice Superior Deluxe hard shell case with cover.
