As the years passed, Billy continued to develop his talents until he became an outstanding guitarist and a Star of the "Grand Ole Opry" and the dream began to have shape and substance. In the Spring of 1965, Billy was instrumental in founding of the R.G.&G. Musical Instrument Company. This corporation began with one thought in mind - to build the finest flat top guitar that could be built - to make Billy's dream come true.
As do many new enterprises, the infant R.G.&G. Company went through a difficult period of development and growth but the dream was never lost. The original investors continued to have faith and the plant workers continued to develop into better craftsmen.
Fine guitars built by master craftsmen of bygone years were examined with care and tested with modern electronic equipment to learn some of the things which must go into the making of a superior instrument and as these basic principles were learned and understood, they were applied to the design and construction of the Grammer Guitar.
By the Spring of 1968, the young R.G.&G. Company began to falter and flounder as result of severe financial difficulties. The original founders of the Company had made the common mistake of concentrating so intensely upon the quality of their product that they had overlooked the cost of achieving that quality. In April, a disasterous fire destroyed the plant and all instruments under production. This looked like the end but others picked up the torch and the Grammer dream continued to live. A new plant location was found and the job of tooling up was begun all over again. In June, Grammer Guitars were again coming off the line.
In the Fall of 1968, the Company was refinanced, reorganized under new management and officially became the Grammer Guitar, Inc. Experienced craftsmen were brought into the plant and all plant craftsmen and supervisors underwent a period of intense training in old world craftmanship coupled with modern production techniques. Rigid quality control and cost reduction measures were initiated and week by week the quality of the already superior Grammer Guitar continued to improve.
The Grammer Guitar, Inc. is a factory and we employ all modern production methods but it is the individual hand work and pride in craftsmanship which makes the Grammer Guitar the superb instrument it now is. Individually and collectively, we take great pride in our product, but we have reluctantly come to face the sad realization that we will never make an instrument good enough for us. We may never make the perfect guitar, but, we will never stop trying.
As a musical instrument maker for many years and as a close personal friend of Billy Grammer for many years, I take great personal pride in what I have been able to contribute toward perfecting this great instrument and in watching Billy's dream come true.
