1923 Lyon and Healy A Style Mandolin
(Serial number - none) Excellent condition showing some playing wear. This mandolin has no markings on it at all, but I think it was built by Lyon and Healy. It does not conform exactly to their catalog models, but like most large manufacturers during that time the company would make a small run of private label instruments for a music store or teacher. I suspect that is what this is. It has a heavily figured birdeye maple back and sides and a vulcanized rubber pickguard, both of which were typical of Lyon and Healy. The woods and the build quality are also very high, which is also typical of Lyon and Healy. Top is solid spruce (likely Adirondack) and the Waverly tuners have a unique fleur-di-lise on the backing plate, and I have only found these used on 1923 and very early 1924 mandolins. Frets are good, neck set is fine and the mandolin plays nicely. Action is easy with the great round hole tone. Looks like either the back was off or more likely a small seam separation was reglued on the side. Excellent for Celtic, old time and jazz. Comes with a nice original? hard case.
